High Performance Computing Facilities For Students

Background

Advanced computing has become a powerful tool and a vital enabling force in many areas of science. As a result, advanced computing has joined, and in some areas displaced. the traditional methods of theory and experiment for advancing knowledge. Providing students access to high capacity, high performance computing (HPC) facilities(systems with capabilities far beyond that of desktop systems) is critical to offering quality undergraduate and graduate education at ISU. Moreover, students need to learn how to use such facilities to be able to compete in many areas of today's job market.

Combining money from the Provost, AIT, student computer fees from the Colleges of Engineering and LAS, and from central student computer fees, a 64 node (128 processor) Intel Xeon cluster has been purchased to support student education. For additional information click here...

Instructors are encouraged to use these facilities for their classes and students are encouraged to utilize these facilities for their classes, or their high performance computing needs, and for pursuing their own personal educational interests. However, these computing facilities are not for email, web browsing, game playing, or to support funded research (student computer fees cannot be used to support funded research). Usage must also conform to the ISU Code of Computer Ethics.

Access

Access will be given to all students who agree that they will use the machine for educational purposes and not for email, game playing, web browsing, and not for computing to support funded research. Instructors can obtain access to the machine for themselves and all their students by filling out the following online form: Application for class access: For instructors only.

Students who do not have access through a class can obtain access by filling out the following form: Application for access: For students . If the machine becomes so heavily loaded that all requests cannot be honored, the review committee will meet to decide the appropriate action needed to solve this problem.
