Lightning CPU Allocation, Disk Quota Allocation and Contribution Policies HPC Partnership Glenn Luecke March 20, 2008 The following were the policies discussed and approved at the 3/20/2008 meeting of the HPC Partnership. CPU Allocation Policy ---------------------- Every six months faculty in the HPC Partnership are given a new allocation based on the amount of money they paid to the Partnership relative to the total contributions. New allocations are made every six months on April 28 and October 28. Unused allocations are not carried over to new allocation periods. The following illustrates how new allocations are made. Suppose a Partner paid $10,000 and the total contributions for lightning are $700,000. Then every 6 months, this person will be allocated 1/70 of the total CPU time on lightning for those six months. Since there are 144*4 = 576 processors on the 144 compute nodes and since there are 24*365/2 = 4,380 hours in 6 months, this means that this person's group will be allocated 4,380*576/70 = 36,041 CPU hours every six months. The minimum contribution to join the HPC Partnership is $10,000. Several faculty have contributed $100,000 plus. In the example above, the 6 month allocation for someone contributing $100,000 would be 360,410 CPU hours. Disk Quota Allocation Policy ----------------------------- HPC Partners contributing $10,000 receive disk storage of 160GB of permanent storage and access to 2 TB of shared scratch storage is included while the grant is in effect. Partners contributing more will receive correspondingly more permanent storage. For example, those contributing $100,000 will receive 1600GB of storage for their group. Those needing additional permanent and/or temporary storage should talk with Glenn Luecke about how to accomplish this. Contribution Policy -------------------- The minimum contribution to join the HPC Partnership is $10,000.
